Pressure washing can make a stained driveway, grimy patio or weathered building exterior look dramatically cleaner. In experienced hands, it is an efficient and valuable property-maintenance tool.


In the wrong hands, however, that same stream of water can strip paint, gouge wood, loosen siding, damage shingles and force moisture into places it was never meant to go.

So, can pressure washing damage your home?


Yes—if the wrong pressure, equipment or technique is used. Professional exterior cleaning is not about applying maximum force to every dirty surface. It is about identifying the material, evaluating its condition and choosing the safest effective cleaning method.


Pressure Is Only One Part of the Process

The cleaning power of pressure-washing equipment is affected by more than the machine’s maximum pressure rating.


A technician must also consider:

  • Distance from the surface

  • Dwell time

Homes built before 1978 may also contain lead-based paint. Disturbing deteriorating lead paint requires special precautions and may be subject to federal, state or local requirements.

High-pressure water can damage screens, break seals, loosen glazing or force water around window frames.


The glass itself may survive the spray while the components surrounding it do not.
